The Institute of Physics-IOP Bhubaneswar is an autonomous research institution funded jointly by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and the Government of Orissa. The Institute of Physics-IOP Bhubaneswar was officially established in 1972 by the Government of Orissa, and registered in 1972 as a registered society under societies Registration Act 1860. The Institute of Physics-IOP Bhubaneswar started functioning under the directorship of Prof. T. Pradhan on September 4, 1974 in two rented rooms of the Utkal University Guest House. After a few months, the Institute of Physics-IOP Bhubaneswar moved to a rented house in Sahid Nagar, Bhubaneswar where its academic activities got started in January 1975 with two faculty besides the then Director, Prof. T. Pradhan. From 1974 to 1981, the Institute of Physics-IOP Bhubaneswar functioned in rented buildings and moved to its present campus in 1981. On March 25,1985, the Institute was taken up by the Department of Atomic Energy. The Institute of Physics-IOP Bhubaneswar is located at Sachivalaya Marg, Bhubaneswar, Orissa.


The management of affairs of the Institute of Physics-IOP Bhubaneswar is vested in a Governing Council consisting of an eminent Scientist nominated as its Chairman, the Director of the Institute and members nominated by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and the Government of Orissa. The Registrar of the Institute of Physics-IOP Bhubaneswar functions as its Secretary. The Institute of Physics-IOP Bhubaneswar receives major part of its financial support from the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India, and a token support from the Government of Orissa. The Institute of Physics-IOP Bhubaneswar also receives funds from other government agencies (like CSIR and U.G.C) to finance specific reserach projects.


The Institute of Physics-IOP Bhubaneswar library was setup in 1974 and started functioning in the year 1975. It started with 1700 books and back volumes of 24 journals, with 17 current journals. 1981 was a landmark year. The Institute of Physics-IOP Bhubaneswar shifted from a rented accommodation to a newly constructed office building which housed the office, library, laboratory etc. The present Library shifted to its new building on August 27, 1996. The present Library is built on an area of 22,000 sq. ft. and is a centrally airconditioned building. It is furnished with modern furnitures. Institute of Physics-IOP Bhubaneswar has 13 research cubicles in the first floor of the library for the users. The ground floor houses the Book Section, Current Journals and Circulation counter. The first floor houses the Back Volumes of Journals, Conference and Lecture Hall. The Institute of Physics-IOP Bhubaneswar library uses LibSys Software for cataloguing, circulation, accounting and acquisition of books and journals. The users are also provided with the services of Crystal Software (for books) and PASS (for publications). The library has services like, acquisition of books, journals and microdocuments, resource sharing among DAE units, publication assistance, reference and reprographic service for the Institute members.


The computer facilitities at Institute of Physics-IOP Bhubaneswar include facility for numerical and algebric computation, graphic applications, documentations, email, internet and automation of library and administration. There are about two hundred PC's installed in the computer centre, library, laboratories, offices of faculties, scholars and administration in three different buildings connected by Local Area Network. The machines for academic use run under Linux and those in administrative offices are run under Windows operating system. User's data is stored in a fileserver with total storage capacity of 1 TB. Institute of Physics-IOP Bhubaneswar is a node under ICOSER project and encourages use of its facility for academic work. Programs which require extensive numerical work are run in the multi-CPU HPK260 workstations and the 24-CPU PC-Cluster. Parallel processing compilers have been loaded in these machines to speed up computation. Institute of Physics-IOP Bhubaneswar offers Doctor of Philosophy in Condensed Matter Physics, Experimental Physics, Nuclear Physics, Numerical Methods, Particle Physics, Quantum Mechanics, Statistical Mechanics.
