On April 1st 1878 the Batala boys Boarding School started classes in the palace of Late Maharaja Sher Singh, called the Anarkali. On the first day there was only 15 students enrolled in the school, all of which had come with Rev.Francis Henry Baring from Amritsar where he had started his school for the sons of the upper class Indian Christians. The three staff members and the students lived together in the Anarkali thus what was once a country palace for a Maharaja, now become a school with dormitories, classrooms and Chapel. The beginnings were made for the establishment of western education in Batala town and tehsil.


On January 1st 1884 Mr.Herbert Udnay Weitbrecht, a German Missionary in the C.M.S. became the first Principal of Baring High School. Mr. Weitbrecht had earned his Ph.D. in 1873 from the University of Tubingen and before coming to India, had done some pastoral work in Britain. He was soon elected President of Batala Municipal Board. Mr.John Anthony Wood a former students of Baring Union Christian College – BUCC Batala , Cambridge, succeeded Mr. Corfield as Principal of School in 1900. Wood decided to open the school today scholars as well as early as 1901-02, there was as many as six day scholars in total strength of 48 students enrolled in the school.


The period of 1934 to 1948 is one of transition in the development of Baring High School to Baring Union Christian College – BUCC Batala . Mr. John Emmanuel Shukla as the first Indian Principal of the school. Mr. Khushal Singh came to Batala with a mandate from the Church Missionary Society to establish a college at Batala by further upgrading the Baring High School to an intermediate college and became the first Principal.


On 29th June, 1944, Baring Union Christian College – BUCC Batala came into existence when the District and sessions Judges of Gurdaspur, Mr.S.Burke, ICS, cut the ribbon at the Anarkali and the first boys and girls enrolled in the college filled the main building, which once had housed exclusively the sons of the upper class Christian families of the Punjab. There were at the time of its inception in 1944 about 75 students predominantly from Hindu, Muslim and Sikh background. The number of resident students in the Baring Union Christian College – BUCC Batala also continued to rise as the college came to be recognized increasingly in the Punjab.


The partition left Baring College the only Christian college in East Punjab. In 1947-48 a special committee was established by the Presbyterians to assess the problems of Baring Union Christian College, and make recommendations of its functioning. On November 20, 1948, efforts made by Presbyterians brought about a meeting of the different churches to consider the question of Batala becoming the seat of union college.

The vision of the college is to promoting academic education and spiritual values among the people, promoting women education, spreading education to the rural areas of the Punjab state, training articulate leaders who can provide a clear direction to society for its future development, and to relating education to the local needs. The Baring Union Christian College – BUCC Batala library is well reputed for its vast collection of books. The three storey library building has a seating capacity for 400 students at a time. The building provides all amenities for serious reading. At present, the library has more than 80000 books on various branches of knowledge; it receives 100 journals/magazines & 10 daily newspapers. Besides this Baring Union Christian College – BUCC Batala library has a good collection of maps and non book reading material. The library collection is well classified, catalogued and kept on open shelves in a system way. The students have full freedom to take any book of their choice from the shelves, read and get it issued for home use.


M.A English reading hall has 5000 books for criticism & is very spacious & well furnished with individual carrels for serious study. M.A Punjabi section has more than 4000 books on criticism with good number of journals on language & literature. All the post graduate students of Baring Union Christian College – BUCC Batala are required to study for two hours daily in the library and its part of their attendance. The library has computer research lab, for research scholar. Library collection is updated every year. The library services are computerized. The College provided book bank facility for deserving students. This section has more than 17,000 books. Through this scheme text books are landed/issued the needy students for full academic session.


Apart from having facilities for the above mentioned games, Baring Union Christian College – BUCC Batala also have a multi gym with specialized equipments for improving the fitness level of the students not only the students but also the staff members of the college. National Cadet Corps NCC came into existence in 1948 and at present it is a largest youth organization of the country.


Moto is NCC is Unity and Discipline. Its aim is to develop the qualities of readership, character, and commandership, spirit of sportsmanship and ideals of service among the youth so as to make them patriotic and responsible citizen of the country. NCC plays a vital role inculcating the spirit of discipline and dignity of labor among the budding youth besides preparing them for undertaking defense assignments in their lives. It is considered to be second line of defense of our country.


Baring Union Christian College – BUCC Batala cadets of NCC can pass Band C certificate examination. Cadets having C certificate in B grade can go directly for SSB interview without any written examination and can become an army officer. NCC cadet can go to Canada, Singapore, Japan, Burma, Sri Lanka, England etc. free of cost under youth exchange programme.


Baring Union Christian College – BUCC Batala can enroll 53 cadets (both boys and girls). Major Dilbag Singh is NCC officer of the College. The activities of NSS are oriented basically towards social welfare and development. Students get an opportunity to participate in special campaigns against socio-economic problems, and to motivate people of the adopted village in organizing towards achieving socio-economic development. In these camps, volunteers performs various activities such as medical camp, provide free medicine to patients, plantation and cleanness. The volunteers got training of first aid, self defence and disaster management by experts of respective fields. College offers different kind of Bachelor, Master and Diploma courses leading to different streams.
