Kannur University was established in 1996 to provide development of higher education in Kasaragod, Kannur, and Wayanad Districts of Kerala State, India. The main campus of Kannur University is located in Mangattuparamba in the Kannur District. The Information Technology Education Centre in Kasaragod (ITEC Kasaragod) provides postgraduate courses in computer science and features sophisticated computing laboratories.It has the following departments- School of English & Foreign Languages, Department of Studies in English School of Social Sciences, Department of Anthropology School of Life Sciences, Department of Biotechnology & Microbiology School of Management Studies, Department of Management Studies School of Information Science & Technology, Department of Information Technology School of Development Studies ,Department of Applied Economics School of Legal Studies, Department of Law School of Physical Education and Sports Sciences, Department of Physical Education School of Chemical Sciences, Department of Chemistry School of Pure and Applied Physics, Department of Physics School of Visual and Fine Arts, Department of Music School of Pedagogical Sciences School of Indian Languages Department of Geography School of Health Sciences.
The Library of Kannur University has been recognized as a research centre for Ph.D in the following subjects.Malayalam, Hindi, Sanskrit, Urdu,English, History, Statistics, Philosophy,Mathematics, Political Science, Sociology & Economics.
Following the multi-campus concept as laid down in the Act, the Kannur University is setting up campuses at different centres at present. Thalassery campus located at Palayad has an extent of 8.55 acres, where most of the Teaching Departments are housed. A student’s hostel and staff quarters have also been established. The Mangattuparamba campus has 21.65 acres.
The Kannur University administrative wing, with the officers of the Vice-Chancellor, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, the Registrar, the Controller of Examinations and the Finance Officer, is established. The work of the Guest House and the building to accommodate the Department of Physical Education is completed. The work of the building to house the Department of Information Technology and other teaching departments is in rapid progress. Payyannur campus is 10 acres in area. The new building under construction in this campus is meant to house the Teaching Departments of Chemical Science and Physics. Mananthavady campus has 1.94 acres.In the final stages of acquisition are a 100 acres site at Madaipara in Kannur for the main campus, a 2 acre site at Palayad, Thalassery exclusively for a campus of Legal Studies.
The Kannur University proposal for acquisition of 10 acres in Kannur city at Thavakkara is under consideration of the Government.It is a matter of joy and pride that the University was included under 12 B of the UGC as per F-9-10/94 (CPP-I) date: 03-02-04.
