The Centre was registered as an Society in June 1999 under the Registration of Societies Act. National Brain Research Centre – NBRC Gurgaon is presently located on 38 acres of land situated at Manesar 50 km from Delhi and was formally dedicated to the nation by the Hon’ble President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam in December, 2003.

The mandate of National Brain Research Centre – NBRC Gurgaon is pursuing basic research to understand brain function in health and disease, generating trained human resource with capability to carry out inter-disciplinary research in neuroscience, promoting neuroscience in India through networking among institutions across the country.

National Brain Research Centre – NBRC Gurgaon functions as a comprehensive brain research institute which has been envisaged as a novel institution of its kind in having both intramural and extramural responsibilities. A unified, highly integrated multidisciplinary team of scientists from varying backgrounds works to pursue its objectives and address highly complex problems in neuroscience that are beyond the capacities of individual investigators. In order to promote human resource development in an interdisciplinary manner, National Brain Research Centre – NBRC Gurgaon was accorded the status of Deemed University by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in May 2002. National Brain Research Centre – NBRC Gurgaon offers a PhD and an MSc-PhD integrated programme in neuroscience with a rigorous course work. To promote neuroscience in India NBRC has networked with institutions across the country. Currently 47 centres throughout India are networked to National Brain Research Centre – NBRC Gurgaon .

In keeping with the Vision and Mission of the Institute, the library and information services play a vital role in supporting, teaching and learning activities and provide the main source for individual research at National Brain Research Centre – NBRC Gurgaon . Library is meant to help Scientific Works, academic community faculty to keep abreast with the latest development in their area of activities and to provide information support for research and consultancy. At the same time for the Scientist, Researchers and students, library is a source to get information support for their course curriculum as well as for their self-development.

National Brain Research Centre – NBRC Gurgaon has established a centralized DNA sequencing facility to meet the demand of cellular and molecular neurobiologist in their various research fields. This facility is greatly helping their research work. Currently, National Brain Research Centre – NBRC Gurgaon is having MegaBACE™ 1000 DNA Analysis System (from Amersham Bioscience), a high-throughput, fluorescence-based DNA sequencing system utilizing capillary electrophoresis with up to 96 capillaries operating in parallel. The system automatically performs sample injection, gel matrix replacement, DNA separation, detection, and data analysis. This system has the ability to sequence 96 samples in just 2 hours and perform up to 9 runs per day. Average read length with dye primer chemistry is 550 bp. This system can also be used for genotyping and SNP analysis.

National microarray facility at National Brain Research Centre – NBRC Gurgaon has been established as a centralized resource by the help of Department of Biotechnology to provide microarray scanning and analysis services. The infrastructure includes state-of-art automated hybridisation station (Amersham Biosciences) and a versatile scanner (Typhoon 9210, Amersham Biosciences) for probe hybridisation and fluorescence detection of processed pre-arrayed glass slides.

The most important feature of the library facility is the digital library. In the electronic mode it provides free of cost, references, papers, full text articles, copies of reprints of relevant literature to users all over India. For in house use the Library has 20 IBM PC-Pentium-IV Computers with ISDN Internet facility to provide best services for researchers at National Brain Research Centre – NBRC Gurgaon . NBRC is providing selected articles as required by scientists, researchers, doctors and research students working in institutions that are networked with National Brain Research Centre – NBRC Gurgaon . The scientists and students send their requirement of articles through e-mail to library@nbrc.ac.in

One of the major mandates of National Brain Research Centre – NBRC Gurgaon is to network the existing neuroscience groups/institutions in the country and promote multidisciplinary research in neuroscience. The networking of the existing neuroscience centres with National Brain Research Centre – NBRC Gurgaon is aimed to prevent unnecessary duplication of the work and facilities already existing. At the same time it would facilitate sharing of expertise and available infrastructure for mutual benefit. It would help to bring together researchers from varying backgrounds to pursue common objectives that may be beyond the capacity of an individual investigator, group or institution. This is important since the major achievements in neuroscience will have to be made through a multidisciplinary approach bringing together scientists working in different disciplines into the main stream of neuroscience and brain research activity

Satellite Centre which may be set up in different parts of the country as and when the need arises and resources are available. "The collaborating centres" would be laboratories, which are involved in out-standing neuroscience or allied research elsewhere in the country and whose research interests are mutually complementary. Such collaborating centres could be laboratories within an institute or could also be a whole institute if multiple departments in an institute plan to collaborate with NBRC. Their programme of work could be supported by National Brain Research Centre – NBRC Gurgaon both financially and intellectually on the basis of MOU. "Satellite centers" would be an integral component of National Brain Research Centre – NBRC Gurgaon and will be governed by the rules and regulations of NBRC and therefore, would be funded through the National Brain Research Centre – NBRC Gurgaon budget. It may be pointed out that DBT would continue to support individual research projects in neuroscience as at present. The extra-mural programme of National Brain Research Centre – NBRC Gurgaon would be driven by the mandate of NBRC.

National Brain Research Centre – NBRC Gurgaon is mandated to play a major role in the human resource development in neuroscience. For this purpose in addition to the in-house academic programmes, National Brain Research Centre – NBRC Gurgaon has already promoted the initiation of a M.Sc. course in neuroscience at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai. Other such programmes to be established with National Brain Research Centre – NBRC Gurgaon support are being negotiated. NBRC has established several Post-doctoral fellowships in different centres in the country. In addition National Brain Research Centre – NBRC Gurgaon coordinates and sponsors several intensive hands-on workshops in the different areas of neuroscience. These activities are being initiated to develop adequate human resources in brain research.

To support these activities it is proposed that major infrastructure facilities such as imaging laboratories (consisting of functional magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography, optical imaging etc.), transgenic and knock out animal facility and DNA microarray facility be set-up at the main centre. These facilities would be developed in a manner such that scientists from all the networked centres would have access to the infrastructure developed at the main campus. Thus, National Brain Research Centre – NBRC Gurgaon is being developed as a frontier institute for neuroscience research, which would not only provide these facilities to the scientists working in-house but also make them available to other scientists in the country. In addition a Distributed Information Centre which would provide access to neuroscience literature to all the networked centres is also being set up.

These areas of research at National Brain Research Centre – NBRC Gurgaon are being developed so as to capitalise on the strengths existing in the country and seek international collaboration as and when needed. The international collaboration is mediated through the existing memorandum of understanding (MOUs) that have been signed with the National Institute of Mental Health, USA and the RIKEN Brain Science Institute, Japan and more such collaborations would be developed when necessary. Research scientists at National Brain Research Centre – NBRC Gurgaon and its networked centres would be encouraged to collaborate with scientists from both India and abroad.
